Tensegrity is a 13 minute piece choregraphed for Conflux Dance Theater’s premiere production by Angelica Burgos. The piece explores the idea of strucutre, exploring how architectural and engineering concepts and strucutres relate to, draw upon, and reflect human experience and movement.
This piece required a close attention to the elements of line and shape to develop the movement, pattern, and balance of the piece - spatially and temporally. My goal was to constanlty build and then release tension - reflecting the tensile and compressive forces present in architectural elemeents like suspension, cantilevers, and arches, and in the pieces namesake, the structural element of ‘tensegrity.’ This is what I primarily explored in the visual research (examples below right), and what informed the use of shape throughout the piece’s movements.
The piece was performed as the finale of Conflux Dance Theater’s premiere performance in May 2022 at Grace Street Theater in Richmond, Virginia.
