Hi and welcome!
My name is Alex Broening and I am a freelance lighting designer, programmer, and electrician based in Richmond, Virginia. As an artist, I deal with instinct and the subconscious, focusing on how color and texture influences human emotion and perception. In my lighting, I draw on my background in visual art and art history, translating those artistic languages to the experiential environment of performance. While I focus primarily on dance, I also design for theater, musicals, and live music. Regardless of the medium, I am always conscious of the environment I am creating – both the art on the stage and the shared atmosphere behind it. I prioritize the collaborative process above all: it is the cooperative creation that makes live performance so special, and producing an intentional, directed, and safe communal practice is always front and center in my mind. If you’re interested in being a part of that collaboration in making art, don’t hesitate to reach out!
Best wishes,
Alex
